A Short Ecological Liturgy

A Short Ecological Liturgy for Inclusion with Other Prayers

Leader:  The heavens declare the glory of God.

People:  And the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

L:  Your voice is in the rustle of the wind in the leaves of an oak and the swaying and whispering of the pines, in beetles and field mice and wolves.  Your words made the trout and the perch.  We hear you in the creaking of glaciers and the lapping of waters on the shore.  We see your glory in the skies, the mountains, and the humblest of prairie grass.  Your face is found in the forests and fields alike, and a thousand birds burst into exuberant praise.

With your angels we cry,

P:  Holy, holy, holy is the LORD God Almighty!  The whole earth is full of his glory!

L:  The whole of creation worships you.

P:  May we also.

L:  You have revealed yourself in the wonders of nature and left them in our care.

P:  We repent, for we have laid waste to what you have made.

L:  You gave us the earth for the sustenance of all.

P:  We confess that we have exploited it without regard for the harm we have caused our neighbor, and we humbly repent.

L:  You have said,

“My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.”

P:  We confess that our treatment of your earthly house is a stumbling block for the world’s worship.

L:  Grant us wisdom and loving hearts, that we might live in the world in a way that honors you and reflects your glory in all the earth.

P:  Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

L:  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

                                                                                                Amen.
